Civic Power FAQ - Protecting and Expanding Civic Space in Italy

Civitates has compiled this Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) to help civil society organisations interested in applying for our open call for proposals in Italy.

Are newcomers (organizations with fewer than 5 years in the field) can apply?

New organisations are welcome to apply. However, we do not fund start-ups and require at least 6 months of operations.

Can you explain the budgetary limitation?

The grant amount should not exceed 50% of the applicant’s previous year’s operational budget. It applies to the 2024 operational budget of the applicant organisation.

Can for-profit organisations apply?

Civitates only fund non-profits. There are no other restrictions in terms of specific formats of organisations. For-profit organisations may participate in coalitions and receive funding re-distributed or re-granted by the coalition lead as long as they can prove that funds are reinvested and not used to generate profit for the organisation.

Can the work of the applicants cover other countries?

The applicant’s work may cover other countries than the priority country (Italy) but that part of their work might not be funded by a Civitates grant.

Are all annexes mandatory, e.g. audited accounts and reports?

Non-audited organisations may apply for Civitates’ funding, however we may ask for additional documentation . If your organisation is not audited please make sure to submit the last three annual accounts (2022,2022 and 2024 – profits and loss and balance sheet) and the operational budget for 2025.

Can coalitions apply?

Coalitions are also welcome to apply to this call.

Can a grant be re-granted?

Applicants may re-grant parts of the Civitates’ funding to coalition members or partners. This should be clearly indicated in the proposed budget. Please note that as part of our due diligence process, we may ask you to provide more information on your selection, due diligence, monitoring, and evaluation procedures.

Is it possible to re-grant or re-distribute a Civitates’ grant to an individual ?

It is not possible to re-grant or re-distribute a Civitates’ grant to an individuals.
